Add pizzazz to a plain box design with creative shaped edges. In this project you’ll learn how to create your own custom decorative box edges by either modifying a template or using decorative punches.

You can turn and ordinary box design into an elegant design by adding decorative shaped edges to your box. There are two ways you can add a decorative edge to your box, either by modifying your box template or using various punches.DecorativeElements01.jpg

Adding Decorative Edges to a Tuck Box Flap

You can add any type of decorative edge design to your template such as a scallop edge.

  1. Transfer your template to a board. (See Transferring Templates for further instructions on how to transfer templates.)
  2. Use a pencil, ruler or compass and draw your decorative edge within the box flap. Do not extend your decorative edge outside of the box flap sides or it will prohibit the flap from tucking into the box.

  3. Then scored, folded and cut out your templates. (See Scoring, Folding and Cutting article for further instructions).

Adding Decorative Edges to a Tray

You can add any type of decorative edge to your tray template such as a scallop edge.

  1. Transfer your template to the board. (See Transferring Templates for further instructions on how to transfer templates.)
  2. Using a pencil, ruler or compass draw your decorative edge onto the tray. The decorative edge can extend outside the box template, however it should be level and balanced so the box lid lays flat and its weight supported.

Adding a Decorative Edge to a Box Lid or Flap using a Punch Tool

You can add artistic decorative edge designs to your template using various punch tool shapes.

  • DecorativeElements07.jpgTake a box you already cut out and scored and lay the unfolded box flat facing the outside of the box up away from the cutting mat.
  • Using a pencil and ruler mark a straight line using tick marks for your punch placement.
  • Using the pencil mark as a guide punch your artistic design into the lid or flap.
  • Once you are done punching your design, your box is ready for assembly.
